STILL ON THE HILL
November 6, 2010
Look into the very heart of the "folkgrass" phenomenon and you’ll find a duo known as Still on the Hill (Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna).
"These musicians have grafted the wild climbing vines of bluegrass, folk, classical and mountain music onto the hardiest of Ozark rootstock. The result is a yet-to-be-named hybrid music that compels people to stop and listen, to pause in their hectic lives and pay attention to something they've never heard before. It's magic, and there's simply not enough magic in the world today.” -- Julie Koehler, Bluegrass Now

PUTNAM SMITH
December 11, 2010
Steeped in old-time banjo/fiddle music, blues, and other Americana Roots music, Putnam Smith is equally at home on guitar, mandolin, piano, and his grandfather's banjo. His songs run the gamut: from a plumbing of melancholic depths, to a lighthearted-ironic-foot-stomping good time.
"What is it that makes a record stand out? It's hard to describe....your mind and heart get engaged. Maybe there are goosebumps...it's magic and when it happens, it's satisfying on many levels. That's how I would describe Putnam Smith's new CD, "Goldrush". IT, all of IT, is there -- just listen." -- Sara Willis, Maine Public Radio

ERNIE HENDRICKSON
January 22, 2011
Ernie Hendrickson grew up on a steady diet of Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, and The Grateful Dead -- early heroes that opened the gates to the deep well of American roots music. Songs from his self-released first solo record Down The Road earned merits from Mountain Stage’s new song contest, and landed Ernie a showcase at Toronto’s NXNE, sister fest to SXSW.
“Dark and pretty songs. Ernie Hendrickson is finding a niche in the indie folk Americana segment. He is a storyteller like Harry Nilsson in a country mood.” --Hans Werksman, Here Comes The Flood

THE SPRING STANDARDS
February 19, 2011
With an emphasis on three-part harmony and a variety of instrumental switching, The Spring Standards are an energetic force of three-part harmony circling over a rock n' roll sound with an old country aftertaste. They take a drum kit and break it up among the three of them, and then they set up along the front of the stage. Whoever's playing bass is also stepping on a kick drum. Whoever's playing guitar is also stepping on the high hat...in the middle stands Heather, switching between melodica, keys, glockenspiel and snare drum. Yet even with all this going on, their harmonies are astounding. Their range and energy make each live show a unique event.

SONOS
March 5, 2011
Emerging in 2009 from the college a cappella scene, Sonos turns the genre on its head with bold interpretations of C21st classics. On their debut recording SonoSings, the vocal group reinvents Radiohead, Bon Iver & Fleet Foxes and dazzles with unique twists on the mainstream such as a dark, trip-hop Jackson 5 cover. Recent appearances include live radio sessions on NPR’s Weekend Edition, BBC Americana, and Sirius/XM.
"…innovative vocal arrangements" and "inspired repertoire, supremely delivered." -- Chris Dourida, KCRW-FM "Prepare to be stunned…” -- The Guardian
JOEL PATERSON
AND THE MODERN SOUNDS
March 26, 2011
Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds is a Chicago based rhythm trio featuring Joel Paterson on guitar, steel guitar and vocals; Beau Sample on string bass and vocals; and Alex Hall on drums and vocals. Winner of The Chicago Reader's "Our Reader's Choice" award for "Best Jazz Act," 2009, this big little band is dedicated to performing traditional American music, specializing in hot jazz, western swing, rockabilly, classic blues and everything in between. The Modern Sounds are on the cutting edge of the Atomic Age—bringing you the best of the 30's, 40's and 50's.
“Clearly, the members of Modern Sounds were being ironic when choosing a band name. The trio sounds like a holdover from an era when Willie Mays still roamed the outfield and school desks doubled as bomb shelters. The Sounds allow Paterson to test the limits of his guitar...Paterson bends and folds notes as though his instrument were made of molten steel.” -- Andy Downing, Chicago Tribune
