One Arrest Made in WIU Hoax

Macomb police said they arrested a Western Illinois University student for Wednesday night’s hoax phone call to 911.

Chief Curt Barker said Alvin Montgomery, age 25, was taken into custody outside Bayless Hall. Montgomery is charged with disorderly conduct, making a false 911 call, and attempted obstruction of justice.

Police said the final charge was filed because Montgomery tried to delete information from a cell phone.

Incident Near WIU Campus Proves to be Hoax

Macomb police surrounded a home for five hours Wednesday evening, believing someone might be barricaded inside. But it turned out they were sent to the home on a prank call.

The 911 center received the call from 509 West Murray around 6:00 pm. Police Chief Curt Barker said the caller was a woman.

Public Safety Director to Retire

The Director of the Office of Public Safety at Western Illinois University will soon have more time to spend with his family and on his motorcycle.

Robert Fitzgerald will retire from his position as OPS director on March 31. He said there comes an age and a time when things must be turned over to the younger people.

“After 40 years in law enforcement … I have no regrets,” Fitzgerald said. “It was a good time for me financially and in my career for me to leave.”

Fitzgerald was charge of public safety at WIU for 15 years.
