Burlington Animal Shelter Re-Opens

The Burlington Animal Shelter is up and running again at a temporary location.

An expansion and renovation of the facility is scheduled to get underway in a couple of weeks.

Des Moines County Humane Society Co-President Susan Denk says the shelter is slated to nearly double in size.

She says the most important improvement will be a new ventilation system that separates between sick animals, health animals and humans.

The shelter had to be cleared out in anticipation of the upcoming construction.

Thousands Show Up for Snake Alley Art Fair

The Snake Alley Art Fair in Burlington started 45 years ago with just a few people selling work. They hung their art on snow fence that was set up along what's been called the most crooked street in the world.

This year the fair drew around 100 artists who set up booths not just on Snake Alley but also on the adjacent Heritage Hill streets.

They were joined by musicians, food and drink vendors, and thousands of art lovers looking to connect with a painting or a piece of jewelry or some other work of art.

Burlington Reconsidering Raises

Burlington’s non-union employees are in a “wait-and-see” mode when it comes to their salaries for the upcoming fiscal year.

The city’s union workers are in line for 3.5% raises as part of the budget that takes effect July 1.  The raises are included in the current union contracts, which are in the fourth year of five.

In May, the city council signed off on a new employee manual for non-union workers.  The manual includes wage increases that are similar to the union raises.

Burlington Police Chief Retiring

  • Chief Luttenegger on Retirement

Burlington is in the market for a new police chief as Dan Luttenegger is calling it a career after 31 years in law enforcement.

He is retiring after spending almost his entire career with the Burlington Police Department, moving up the ranks from patrol officer to chief.

Luttenegger was appointed to the top spot in the department in 2007 following the death of former Police Chief Dave Wunnenberg.

He says the time is right for him to step aside as he reaches retirement age later this month.

Jason Parrott’s guests are Russ Brown and Scott Smith, who are members of the Burlington Steamboat Days Committee. 

Brown is currently serving as President while Smith is the Vice President for Marketing.

Burlington Steamboat Days American Music Festival is a week-long event that takes place in the parking lot of Memorial Auditorium, along the Mississippi River.

The main stage will be open Tuesday-Sunday, which such artists as Blake Shelton, Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper.
