Des Moines County Flood Buyout Nearly Over

Des Moines County is close to completing a project that is more than four years in the making.

Regional Planner Dan Eberhardt says 19 structures in the northeast corner of the county had to be addressed after the devastating flood of 2008.

He says about 2/3 of them have already been demolished, with the remaining 6 in Huron Township to be taken down within the next few weeks.

The lots are as large as three acres.

The remaining demolition projects would complete the county’s buyout program.

Burlington Police Station Future

City and county leaders understand there are structural concerns with Burlington’s police station on North 3^rd Street.

Those concerns led to discussions about a joint law enforcement center that would be shared by Burlington and Des Moines County.

Chairman Tom Broeker says the County Board of Supervisors backed out of the talks because of the potential, multi-million dollar price tag for the project.

The future of the building is back in the news after mold was discovered on the third floor, which houses the Des Moines County Attorney’s office.

Des Moines County to Maintain Services

The decision by the Iowa Legislature to revamp the state’s mental health care system has counties struggling to determine their role in the new landscape.

The state will pay for Medicaid-related services, which means counties will receive less in reimbursements.

In response, Des Moines County established waiting lists for a wide variety of services.

CPC Administrator Ken Hyndman says the idea was to reduce spending in case the county’s budget runs short without certain state reimbursements.

Des Moines County to Help E-911 Board

Des Moines County is being asked to borrow $450,000 on behalf of the county’s E-911 Board.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Broeker says the agency still owes money to a local bank for some computer equipment purchased years ago.

Broeker says a recent state audit revealed that Des Moines County’s E-911 Board should not be carrying any debt. He says that means the agency cannot renew the loan, which must take place within the next few months.
