LEE COUNTY

An engineering study for a proposed sewer system in rural Lee County could be completed before the end of the year.

The study will provide construction options and potential costs for people living in and around Mooar/Powdertown.

The results of the study will determine whether the sewer project moves forward.

The Lee County Board of Supervisors plans to review it before meeting with residents.

BURLINGTON

The Burlington Police Department has identified Crystal Newman, 33, as the woman found dead, last Thursday, in the home at 800 S. 8^th Street in Burlington.

Authorities say Newman had a gunshot wound and there was a firearm/ammunition at the scene, but they have not determined a cause of death.

The children living at the residence were not harmed.

KEOKUK, IA

Members of United Steelworkers Local 444 have ratified a new contract with Henniges Automotive.

The union represents more than 400 workers at the auto-parts supplier in Keokuk.

Employees had been working under their previous contract after rejecting an earlier offer roughly two weeks ago.

DAVIS COUNTY, IA

A hunting preserve in Davis County is under quarantine after a white-tail deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.

Burlington, IA

The Iowa Department of Transportation is recognizing Burlington’s public transportation system for increasing ridership and decreasing cuts.

The Burlington Urban Service (B.U.S.) has been named the “Most Improved Urban Transit System” for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011.

The agency says ridership is up about 18% while the cost is down about 15% per ride.

KEOKUK, IA

A four-to-four vote by the Keokuk City Council means A&B Furniture will not be able to display motorcycles in front of its store on Main Street.

1^st Ward Alderman Mike O’Connor says the city must draw the line when businesses want to place vehicles on sidewalks.

The denial also means A&B Furniture cannot place furniture in front of the property.

In the same meeting, the city council approved a sidewalk display for Willow Tree Flowers and Gifts that calls for plants and a framed sign.

BURLINGTON, IA

The Burlington School District will be adding a culinary arts program to the high school, starting next year.

Superintendent Jane Evans says it will start out as one course and expand in subsequent years. It will be taught at the high school with field experience available out in the community.

Evans says it will target 9^th-12^th graders who are interested in working in or managing a restaurant or other aspect of the hospitality industry.
