Possible Attempt to Abduct KHS Student

More details have been released about the possible attempt to abduct a Keokuk High School student this afternoon.

The Keokuk Police Department says at approximately 1:00 P.M., a female student was approached by an elderly man as she was walking home.

Authorities say the man allegedly asked her if she needed a ride home as well as other questions that made her feel uncomfortable.

She refused his request and continued to walk home, prompting the man to drive off.

Pitman Guilty of First Degree Murder

Adam Pitman, 24, of Keokuk has been found guilty of one count of 1st Degree Murder.

He was accused of choking his mother, Rosa Pitman, 46, to death in her home at 1602 Concert Street in Keokuk in the early morning hours of August 30, 2011.

An autopsy revealed Rosa Pitman died of asphyxiation due to a combination of strangulation and suffocation.

1st Degree Murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The fourth day of the murder trial of Keokuk resident Adam Pitman again wrapped up early due to just one witness being on the docket.

Judge Cynthia Danielson is presiding over the case at the South Lee County Courthouse in Keokuk.

Pitman is accused of killing his mother, Rosa Pitman, in her home in the early morning hours of August 30, 2011. He allegedly confessed to the crime after being pulled over for a traffic violation several hours later.

Keokuk Increases Sewer Rates

Keokuk residents and businesses will pay more for sewer services as the city council has finalized a vote to increase the monthly rate effective August 1.

The commercial rate will increase by 3% while the residential rate will go up 5%.

Mayor Tom Marion says the commercial rate increase is smaller because Keokuk wants to remain competitive for businesses and industries.

The city says the minimum monthly charge for a residence will now be $24.25.

New Keokuk Police Chief This Week

Keokuk could have a new police chief in place by the end of the week.

Mayor Tom Marion is recommending Administrative Captain Dave Hinton for the post.

Hinton has been with the Keokuk Police Department for more than 20 years.

Marion says Hinton stood out from the other five candidates, who are also members of the department.

Keokuk Police Chief Retiring

Keokuk Police Chief Tom Crew used Thursday night’s city council meeting to announce his retirement. His final day on the job will be June 28, but he will officially leave the payroll on July 6.

Crew has been with the Keokuk Police Department for 25 years. He worked his way through the ranks, serving as patrol officer, captain and assistant chief along the way.

Crew has led the department for the last seven years.

His time in local law enforcement also included a stint as commander of the Lee County Narcotics Task Force.
